#Meet The Cholos
Calaca is a famous local sportsman and gym owner. He earned his nickname as a kid because he was very skinny. Therefore, by age 14, he started going to the gym with his middle school friends.
As the years passed, he and his friends continued to train in different gyms in the city, his goals for self-improvement grew and so did his passion for bodybuilding. He worked hard while still attending school, and by the time he graduated high school, he had saved enough money to open his own gym, turning his passion into a business.
With his business thriving and money no longer being an issue for the first time in his life, he moved on to test himself in various other sports. He took up cycling and then mountain biking, found some success there and even made it to the famous chupacabras 100km mountain bike race.
Although a peaceful person by heart, being born in the hood, fighting was not unknown to him, so his next adventure was in the world of contact sports. He started training kickboxing and, after realizing how full the discipline of contact sports made him feel, he wanted to expand to other martial arts. At one point, he even traveled to Brazil for several months to learn jiu-jitsu. Upon his return, he had an expansion plan for his business. In addition to his fitness gyms, he would open a mixed martial arts gym offering boxing, kickboxing and jiu-jitsu lessons.
Despite his though guy looks, he is a very friendly and respectful person. He befriends most of the sports scene in town, all of whom consider him an example of discipline and perseverance in the community.
He is now a very muscular guy, but the nickname remains, now as the brand of his business.
Tanque is a renowned music producer and DJ from south central Chihuahua state. At least one weekend a month, you can find his show at the ‘Palmas’ local pub, where he has become a sensation due to the unique cumbia, salsa and bachata medleys and mixes that he creates.
Due to his strong build, most of the kids were afraid to play with him. As soon as he tried to join them in the daily football matches played on the block’s improvised football field, they would find an excuse not to include him in the game. One day, sitting on the sidelines watching his neighbors play, he saw how a bunch of kids from another neighborhood entered the field with their bicycles, took the ball and tried to bully away the kids playing there. Soon rocks started flying in every direction and then turned to punches as they tried to defend themselves. It wasn’t looking good for the localkids as they were slightly outnumbered, and just as they were thinking of running away, they saw his neighbor, Tanque, running towards the invaders full speed like an armored vehicle. His help turned the thing around, and they were able to scare the invaders away. It was then and there that he earned his Tanque nickname as nobody could handle him. The kids learned how valuable it was to have such a strong boy around them and, from that day on, he was a part of every game and even acted as team captain, choosing the rest of the players.
At age 14, his dad bought him a used music mixer from the local flea market. He would soon turn his room into a studio where he spent most of his time after school, learning what every single button in the mixer did. He eventually decided that he wanted to follow his passion and mix for a living.
Contrary to popular belief, his cheek tear-shaped tattoo is meant to honor his late cat, Tito, who faithfully sat beside him for over 15 years, providing company and support while he built his producing and mixing skills.
Jenny is a nurse. Growing up watching her mom and grandma going to work at the hospital in their perfectly ironed white uniforms, she knew she wanted to follow in their footsteps, so, at 15 years old, right after graduating middle school, she joined “Dorothea E. Orem” nursing school, just like her mother and grandma before her. A couple of years later, she graduated with the highest honors and was ready to take on the world.
Even with her family’s impeccable reputation and contacts in the nursing field, it took her longer than expected to find a steady job. When she finally landed her dream job at the Regional Hospital, she felt like all the effort had finally paid off. Little did she know that her personal life would also change, as early after joining the hospital, she met her boyfriend #Wero there, two birds with one stone.
She loves all things fashion and art, is a huge fan of the “Ink Master” show and would love to get a tattoo, however, she is afraid of needles, so, for the time being, she focuses on her clothing choices, hanging around downtown with her friends showing off her best hairstyles, accessories and outfit combinations.
Jenny has a twin sister, Gloria, who is 3 minutes younger than her. Despite being the exact opposite and unable to be with each other for more than 5 minutes without arguing, Gloria agrees that her sister is the kindest and loveliest person anyone could ask for. She loves animals and people alike and stands firmly against animal cruelty.
Wero is a young promising boxing prospect. According to Yolanda, his mother, many years ago, as a teenager, she traveled to visit her cousins in Tijuana for the summer break. She enjoyed touring the city and sneaking into bars at a barely legal age. It was in one of those bars that she met Michael, Wero’s dad, a college student from San Diego who often crossed the border looking for parties and tequila. It was an odd encounter since Yolanda didn’t speak English, and Michael’s Spanish was only suitable for naming some beer and tequila brands. However, as these things usually go, they found their way to communicate. They kept hanging out for the rest of the summer. Michael came to see her almost every day until she finally returned home. He promised to visit on the next vacation break. Several months later, Yolanda found out she was pregnant. As soon as Michael heard the news, he took the first bus to Yolanda and never left her side.
It was very clear from birth, that the baby was the living image of his father, inheriting all his physical traits and very few from his mother. This became more evident when he joined the kindergarten and both teachers and kids alike began to refer to him as “the blond kid”. Trying to keep a low profile when you are as easily identifiable is not really an option, so he embraced his god-given looks and adopted the nickname “Wero” (Blond).
Fearing that he might not fit in with the rest of the kids or might be bullied due to his distinctive looks, his parents decided to get him into one of Calaca’s gyms, so he could start training boxing, just in case he needed it to defend himself from bullying in the future. As soon as the boy started training, coaches noticed something in him; if his mom’s roots didn’t show physically, they sure showed in his movement, passion and character in the ring. Not only was boxing not needed for bullying, but his coaches began to encourage him to consider it a profession. He achieved an amazing 29-0 amateur record and plans were in order to make his professional debut, but just as promoters were trying to find a venue and an adversary, the world was shut down due to covid-19 for over a year and his professional debut was put on hold.
After one of his boxing fights, Wero felt he had punched his opponent so hard that there was something wrong with his right fist, so he went to the regional hospital to have it looked at. There, he met a young nurse, Jenny, who seemed so sweet and genuinely concerned about his injury. In the end, his fist just needed some rest, but the real good news was, he felt he had met someone special.
Lupillo is a custom car paint designer. He works at a prestigious paint shop that has been in his family for three generations, and more than likely he will be the next in charge when his father decides to retire.
He is not particularly a sports person, but he finds it extremely difficult to gain weight regardless of how much he eats. As a kid, after his school contacted local authorities to investigate a possible case of negligence at home due to his skinny looks, his parents took him to see several doctors to try to figure out the reason why he looked as undernourished as he did. After months of complex tests and thorough medical examinations, none of them could find anything wrong with him. The doctors were all amazed. The final consensus was that he was a healthy child with an outstanding metabolism. They recommended a healthy diet, but deep inside, they were all jealous of the kid’s situation. After all, who wouldn’t want to eat anything without having to worry about their weight?
Apart from that small run-in with children’s services, he always had a good time at school, even though he was just an average student in most of the science subjects, when it was anything related to art, he always excelled. That was his thing. He had a natural talent for drawing and it didn’t take long for his classmates to notice. When the class subject was not of his particular interest, he would start drawing his teachers. Reactions were diametrically opposite among school staff. Some of them were highly offended when they discovered they had been drawn as a cartoon, others joked about it and felt flattered, and there were some others that even specifically requested to be drawn.
Luckily for him, the family business was a place where he could take advantage of his gift. Most of the shop’s work was normal paint jobs and detailing, but as the word started to spread, there was a growing number of customers coming from all over the state to get their cars a customized flames design, religious characters, mythological monsters or simply a random work of art straight from the mind of the talented Lupillo immortalized in their cars.
